Joe Biden addressing Parliament, attending gala dinne

On Thursday and Friday, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden will be in Ottawa for meetings, to speak to Parliament, and to attend a gala dinner.

He is the first sitting American president to visit Canada’s capital since Barack Obama did so in June 2016. Later that year, as his time as vice president was coming to an end, Biden went to Ottawa.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic started more than three years ago, these in-person visits have become less common. A visit from the U.S. president is one of the most well-known and disruptive foreign dignitaries to come to the capital.

This is what this visit was like.
