Many locations in the Maritimes recorded their warmest calendar month on record.

In many places, July 2023 was the hottest month on record

The first numbers are in, and it’s no surprise that many places in the Maritimes will remember July 2023 as the warmest month on record. In July, the days were hot, but what was more important was that the nights were also warm. Throughout the month, a strong southerly wind kept the humidity high across the region, which made the sea surface temperature rise above average. Because of all of these factors, the average low temperature for most places in July was between 16 and 18 C.Also, many places, like Charlottetown, Moncton, Saint John, and Halifax, had their warmest calendar month on record.

Climate change is making the summers in the Halifax area warmer, as shown by a closer look at the numbers. Since 2012, six of the ten warmest months on record have happened. Since 1871, records have been kept.

The Halifax area also recorded it's warmest month on record, topping August of 2018.

Also the warmest month on Earth

From what we know so far, last month was also the hottest month on record for the whole world.

The average temperature around the world in July is expected to be about 1.5 C higher than it was between 1850 and 1900, before people burned coal, oil, and gas and did other things to warm the planet.

Over the next few days, as the numbers are crunched and the official data is released, you can expect to hear more about the July records around the world.
