Ryan Reynolds, Snoop Dogg, and, supposedly, The Weeknd all join separate bids

Ryan Reynolds, Snoop Dogg, and, according to reports, The Weeknd are all competing to buy the Ottawa Senators.

First, Canadian-born Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds let everyone know he was interested.

In the past week, two recent Super Bowl performers have been brought in by the music industry:A report from Postmedia on Saturday said that legendary rapper Snoop Dogg has joined one bid, and that Canadian recording artist The Weeknd has joined another.

Ottawa is not known for being a place where famous people come to perform. Carrie Underwood, who is married to Mike Fisher, and Elisha Cuthbert, who is married to Dion Phaneuf, are probably the most well-known people who have been connected to the team.

When Mike Comrie played for Ottawa in the late 2000s, Hilary Duff was also seeing him.

The NHL commissioner, Gary Bettman, said that the sudden interest is more of a good sign. The Bob McCown Podcast last week.

“I actually think our franchises will become more valuable than they are now,” he said, adding that they have been undervalued so far.

“It should show all the fans in Ottawa that this team has a very bright future right there in Ottawa. The nation’s capital is getting a lot of interest from potential NHL owners.”

The NHL does say that it wants the public to stay out of the sale process to keep things fair.

Not really about Ottaw

Fans may think their team is the center of a celebrity bidding war, but at least one expert says it’s not really about the city at all.

“They don’t care about the Ottawa Senators at all. “They want to own a professional sports team,” said Moshe Lander, an economics professor at Concordia University.

Lander said that the four major sports leagues in North America only have 124 professional sports teams, which don’t come up for sale very often.

“If you’re going to get involved, you’ve got to do it when you can,” he said.

Even though the teams are very expensive, Mosher said, “they show huge appreciation and value in a very short amount of time.” This means that even if you only own a small percentage, it’s a great return on investment.

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said that no matter who wins the bid, Ottawa will come out as a winner.

He told CBC, “If big-name celebrities and entertainers see potential in Ottawa, that’s a huge vote of confidence.”

“I think it’s great for marketing the city, and it means that Ottawa is being talked about around the world. It also shows that there is a lot of potential here, so I think this can only lead to good things.”

The team was put up for sale in November, which was a few months after the death of the owner, Eugene Melnyk. People should find out who the new owners are in the next few weeks.
