Parade goes on with more security because there have been more threats and hateful acts

Canada’s biggest Pride parade is happening today in downtown Toronto, and a lot of people are expected to come.

The event, which happens every year at the end of a week of celebrations for the city’s LGBTQ community, is expected to draw thousands of marchers and 250 groups.

Some well-known politicians, like Jagmeet Singh, leader of the federal NDP, and a few people running for mayor of the city on Monday, are also expected to be there.

But security will be tighter than usual because there have been more threats against Pride festivals across the country and more hate crimes against the LGBTQ community.

The group that puts on the Pride Toronto parade says that the cost of police protection has more than doubled this year, and the cost of insurance has gone from $67,000 in 2022 to more than $300,000.

The parade will start at two in the afternoon.
