Police say the people who did it said hateful things about the LGBTQ community

Three teens have been charged in a robbery that happened in west Ottawa on Wednesday night, which police are calling “hate-motivated.”

Around 8:20 p.m., a group of men punched, kicked, and stole from a man in the street near Greenbank Road and Lisa Avenue, police said.

Three teens were taken into custody after police were called to the area.

The event is being treated as a “hate-motivated incident,” according to the police, because the people who did it said hateful things about the LGBTQ community. Police also said that the hate and bias crime unit is taking part in the investigation.

The three teens are each charged with one count of theft. One of the teens also faces two more counts of failing to follow through on an agreement.

Police did not say who the victim was or if they were a boy or a girl. They also did not say if the people involved were teenagers.

In a news release, police said, “Recent events in our city are adding to safety concerns for some groups of people who may be more likely to be victims of hate crimes and acts of violence.”
