Simon Fraser University football, seen during training camp in early August, announced on Tuesday that it would be moving four games from Burnaby, B.C. to Blaine, Washington due to COVID-19 entry requirements to Canada.

Team moved from competing in Canada to the NCAA ten years ago, but it was hard for them to do well

The football team at Simon Fraser University has four downs and is out of the game.

The university in Burnaby, B.C., announced on Tuesday that it would end its varsity team right away, putting an end to a 53-year tradition at the school.

In a statement, SFU President Joy Johnston said that the decision was made because the Lone Star Conference did not invite them to play in their conference for the 2024 season.

“Students shouldn’t have to deal with the constant uncertainty. The university carefully looked at all of its options and came to the conclusion that football is no longer a good choice for SFU “she told me.

Simon Fraser University is the only Canadian school that plays in the American National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In 2010, the school moved from the Canadian U Sports to the American NCAA.

Since then, SFU has done well in a number of sports, but it has been hard for them to compete in football. They ended the season with a record of 18 wins and 99 losses.

One reason the university joined the NCAA was to be able to give more scholarships to athletes. Johnson said the school would keep its promises to those athletes who choose to stay at SFU and meet the eligibility requirements.

More to come.
