Environment Canada says that a line of storms could hit the area from noon to night

Environment Canada has warned people in the Ottawa-Gatineau area to be ready for strong thunderstorms.

The agency is warning that a line of storms could hit the area between noon and evening.

The storms could bring high winds, tornadoes, hail the size of a toonie, and as much as 40 millimeters of rain.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are also in effect for Ottawa South-Richmond-Metcalfe, Kaladar-Bannockburn-Bon Echo Park, Westport-Charleston Lake, Plevna-Sharbot Lake-Western Lanark County, and Tamworth-Sydenham-South Frontenac.

In Quebec, warnings are also out for the Lièvre River and Low-Wakefield areas.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in place for the rest of eastern Ontario and western Quebec.

Watches are sent out by Environment Canada when conditions are right for a severe thunderstorm, while warnings are sent out when the storms are about to happen.
