Mitch Marner takes questions from the media during a press conference at the Paradise Double Ice Complex in Paradise, NL on Sept. 14, 2019.

The police are still looking for a third person

Police said Friday that two men are facing multiple charges for two armed carjackings that happened last year. One of the carjackings involved Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner.

Toronto police said in a news release that a 24-year-old man from Brampton was charged with six crimes. These included two counts each of robbery with a gun, disguise with intent, and failing to follow bail conditions.

A 21-year-old man from Toronto was charged with robbery with a gun and trying to look like someone else.

A third person is still on the run in connection with the carjackings. Police say that when he allegedly did the crimes, he was wearing dark clothes and a mask.

On May 16, Marner and another person were getting into his black 2021 Land Rover near The Queensway and Islington Avenue in Etobicoke when a Honda Civic pulled up and blocked their way.

Police said that two men with guns got out of the Honda and told Marner to give them his keys. Armed with a knife, a third man demanded that the other victim give him their phone.

Two of the suspects got into the Land Rover and drove away, while the third got back into the Honda and also left the scene.

Toronto police said they were called to The Queensway and Islington Avenue area around 7:46 p.m. for reports of a man robbed of his car.

The other carjacking happened about a month earlier, on April 17, near the Queensway and the West Mall. Police say that the victim was sitting in a parked 2020 Audi R8 when a dark gray sedan pulled up and stopped him from driving away.

The armed suspect then asked for the keys to the Audi, and the driver ran away, police say. The suspect took off in the sports car, and the grey sedan driver followed.

Police said that Marner’s Land Rover was eventually found, but the Audi R8 is still missing.

Officers from the Hold Up Squad carried out two search warrants on March 8 and found “items of evidentiary value related to the investigation.” This meant that both accused were taken into custody.

Both of them were due in court on the same day.
