A wildfire in Powers Creek has burned over 20 hectares, and more than 50 people have been told to leave their homes

A wildfire near Smithers in northwest B.C. has forced dozens of people to leave their homes and put hundreds more on alert to leave.

According to the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS),the Powers Creek blazeAs of Saturday morning, an area three kilometers south of the town covers 20 hectares.

In a tweet Friday night, the BCWS said the fire was spreading moderately quickly and that multiple pieces of heavy equipment, including aerial resources, would work to stop it overnight.

The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako put outan evacuation orderAt 11 p.m. Friday for 51 properties west of the Telkwa River that can be reached from Tatlow Road.

An evacuation alertAccording to the regional district, covers 206 properties in the area of the fire.

The district also told people to leave their homes because of a fire on Highway 16 that was southeast of the Powers Creek fire.

The BCWS said Friday that the Tatin Lake wildfireWas spreading quickly and had taken over six hectares of land north of Highway 16.

The evacuation alertCovers nine properties north of the Endako River. Savory Road gives access to these properties.

There are six “fires of note” going on in the province right now. These are fires that are very visible or pose a threat to public safety.

Even though most of them are in the north of British Columbia, theDavis Lake fireFriday, the public was warned about a fire east of Mission in the Fraser Valley.


The rise in fires is a sign thata heat warningCovers the parts of Central Coast, North Coast, and most of the Interior that are inland.

Environment Canada says that the extreme heat should last until the beginning of next week.

Special weather reports also say that smoke from wildfires will make the air quality bad in the north and central Interior.

An evacuation alert means that people should get ready to leave their homes quickly or not at all. When people are told to evacuate, they should leave right away.
