A five-alarm fire raged out of control at an industrial site in Etobicoke Friday.

Businesses had to leave, and people in the area were told to stay put

On Friday, Toronto firefighters were called to an industrial site in north Etobicoke to fight a fire that was “out of control” and had caused several explosions and the evacuation of nearby businesses.

The fire started early in the morning at a business on Vulcan Street and quickly got worse, said Deputy Fire Chief Jim Jessop, who talked to the media near the scene. No one has been hurt, as far as we know.

Jessop said that a business that sells oil and car fluids like lubricants and solvants is in the building.

Twenty-four other businesses near the building have also been told to leave, and people in the area are being told to stay in their homes and close their windows. Late Friday morning, thick black smoke was still coming from the site.

Firefighters are keeping a close eye on the air quality, and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment has been told.

Jessop said that he thinks it could take the better part of the day to put out the fire.

“This is going to be a very, very long day for our crews,” he said, adding that part of the roof had fallen in, making it harder to get to some parts of the fire.
