Some parts of the area could get up to 35 cm of snow until Saturday night

A storm that dumped ice and snow on parts of northwestern Ontario has made roads dangerous and caused schools and businesses to close.

The area was hit by snow last night, and it’s expected to keep snowing through the weekend.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for areas from Atikokan and Wabakimi, in the west, to Wawa, in the east, as well as for areas along the north shore of Lake Superior and up to the Greenstone area, in the north.

The government agency warned that there would be a lot of snow, with 20 to 35 centimeters falling in most of the area. Nipigon and Marathon, which are on the north shore, could get 30 to 50 centimeters of snow by Saturday.

Environment Canada says that there will also be strong northeasterly winds that will cause blowing snow that could make it hard to see.

Here is the latest information about how to get around in northwest Ontario and how the roads are doing.

Live highway conditions&nbsp

On Friday morning, parts of Highway 11/17 were closed.

As of 5 a.m., a jackknifed transport truck had completely blocked the highway between Nipigon and West of Dorion Loop Road, according to the Ministry of Transportation.

Also, Highway 17, which goes from Dryden to Shabaqua, was closed because of an accident.

Drivers were told to stay away from the area.

The ministry said that disabled vehicles could block some of the lanes on Highway 17 west of Rossport. There was a way to control traffic.

Changes to school bus route

This week, most students in the area are on March break, so there are no school bus or school closure problems to report.
