Plane was going to Salmon Arm, British Columbia

Six people died when a small plane crashed in the mountains west of Calgary on Friday night.

The plane had five passengers and one pilot on board, according to the RCMP. The plane had left Springbank Airport near Calgary around 9:30 p.m. to go to a church event in Salmon Arm, B.C. Saturday morning, crews found the plane about five kilometers north of Kananaskis Village.

Staff Sergeant Ryan R.J. Singleton said that no one was left alive. The names of the victims were not made public.The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is looking into what went wrong. 


Earlier: Officials are looking into a late-night plane crash that killed several people in Kananaskis Country.

In a news release on Saturday, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada said that it had sent a team of investigators to Kananaskis Village to look into what they are calling a Piper PA32 accident.

A TSB spokesperson named Liam MacDonald said that the small plane took off from Springbank Airport near Calgary on Friday night, was reported missing, and was later found about five kilometers north of Kananaskis Village. 

MacDonald said that there were many people on the plane. 

Stuart Brideaux, an EMS public education officer, said that no patients were taken from the scene, which means that “Transportation Safety officials and the RCMP will have to look into this a lot more.” 

He said that EMS was not able to confirm how many people were on the plane or how they were doing. 

He said that the scene is spread out over a large area near Kananaskis Village. 

Alberta Parks posted that there is no parking at the nearby Heart Creek Day Use Area because of a “ongoing incident.” 

About 100 kilometers west of Calgary is Kananaskis Village.
