A resort south of Cancun is holding a Canadian man in connection with the death of a woman from Dawson Creek, B.C.

Prosecutors in Mexico said that the woman’s body was found dead in a hotel on Friday, but they did not name the man or the hotel. Later, the victim’s family confirmed that she was 23-year-old Dawson Creek, B.C., resident Kiara Agnew.

The police have been contacted by CBC News to find out who the suspect is.

According to the prosecutors, the death happened on the Mayan Riviera, which is the stretch of coast south of Cancun. The local news said it happened at a hotel in Playa del Carmen, which is a tourist town.

Katlyn Levesque, Agnew’s aunt, told CBC News, “I didn’t want it to be true, and I still don’t want it to be true.” “It’s being looked at as a possible murder of a woman.”

No one knows if the man has a lawyer or not. A tweet from a police force in Mexico said that a foreigner is being looked into for femicide in a town on the Mayan Riviera.

In a statement, Global Affairs Canada said they knew that a Canadian citizen had died and that another Canadian was being held in Mexico.

A spokesperson, Marilyne Guèvremont, said that consular officials are helping the families and are in touch with local authorities. “Privacy concerns mean that we can’t give you any more information.”

Katlyn Levesque, Agnew’s aunt, says that the 23-year-old grew up in the village of Plaster Rock in New Brunswick and moved to Dawson Creek when she was young. She was with her boyfriend in Mexico when she died.

Agnew worked at the Dawson Creek branch of the Lake View Credit Union.

A Facebook post from the credit union said, “Everyone at Lake View Credit Union is saddened by the death of our teammate and friend, Kiara Agnew.” “We send all those who have been affected our love and faith.”

As of 1 p.m. PT on Sunday, Levesque’s fundraiser to bring Agnew’s body back to Canada had raised more than $17,000. Agnew’s aunt said that the two were in Mexico to celebrate a birthday.

“Kiara loved to travel, and she’s always wanted to go places,” Levesque said. “She was really looking forward to the trip, and she had a good heart. She was full of life, brave, and determined.”
