Must do...
Cormac Rea

Part of the Canadian Tulip Festival, which has been going strong since May 2, Celebridée is billed as an "18-day celebration of ideas." Some of the world's leading thinkers have been in attendance, tip-toeing through the tulips, and the last lap promises to be a doozy. Chris Anderson (editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine) arrives on May 15 to deconstruct the world we live in. On May 16, Richard Florida, a multiple bestselling author on economic theory, asks "Who's Your City?" with his latest book. Jared Diamond, Pulitzer Prize winner for Guns, Germs and Steel, appears May 17 as the "epitome of the celebrity scientist." Finally, Maude Barlow, Ed Broadbent and Maclean's writer Paul Wells clean up the show on Monday, May 19. More details available at www.celebridee.com

Tulip Festival Vigil

Kids on their way to the Tulip Festival pass by the Vigil calling for Abolition of Coal-Fired Plants - No Nukes!

On the way to the Tulip Festival, throngs of people flood Sussex Dr putting the sidewalk across from the United States Embassy to some hefty use. Many of those people brought out by the flower festival are families with little children.

They are greeted with a white bed sheet fastened to a stick on each end, unfurled and held vertically right on the sidewalk. A bed sheet turned TV screen on the street displays a message saying something about Coal burning, that it should stop without delay.

Waves of stunned adults carry the message on their lips either aloud or whispering word by word as they read it off the "screen."

I see children, their eyes so serious, glued to the banner, four-, five-, six-year-old children.

It is possible that those children have never seen a bed sheet outside of a bedroom ever before - especially spread out so on the street, with some large black letters painting a message - an ominous one - but true one.

Finally, I hear a small voice, "Mom, what do they ask for?" but the answer doesn't happen to be within my earshot.

After passing by, led by their children, some families stop and turn around to look at the banner, parents' faces animated with some meaning.

What do these parents tell their children? How do they answer their questions not only about the bed sheet on the street, but about coal burning and reasons why it must be abolished?

To me the reason why coal burning must be abolished immediately is right in front of my eyes, in the eyes of those children.

"Have we failed them?" echoes in my ears. "and for what reasons..?"

Nothing justifies destruction of their future.

Tulip Festival

I go to the Tulip Festival every year and have to say i really like what they have done with it in the past few years. There is a better variety of things to do. there is no admission which is a plus and I am sure that the organizers see a difference in attendance. I think that the way they have put up the tents with all the countries cultures is awesome.
