Courting racism
Stuart Trew

I come from some of the most effectively racist stock on the planet. Which means I'm British in ancestry even though my parents moved my brother and I to Calgary when I was four. I use the word "effective" because although you can argue that racism and xenophobia are universal, no "people" since the Middle Ages have been able to incorporate it into foreign and economic policy as totally as the Anglo-Saxons. They created colonialism by mixing racism and power (or what amounts to the same thing as power: technology).

Swedish intellectual Sven Lindqvist takes the idea further down this depressing line of thought in his 2001 book, A History of Bombing: Racism plus the power of technology (machine guns, high explosives, aircraft) can also equal genocide. Saxons practised genocide in Germany to extinguish the Jews. The Anglos used it in Japan-only two Japanese villages were spared either total destruction by firebombing or total destruction by atomic weapons-to win the Second World War. And thanks to the genocide against aboriginal North Americans, Canada and the U.S.A. exist today as majority white, Anglo-Saxon states.

Lindqvist has devoted his life work to making accessible the ugly history of Western (read white) brutality against "savages"-the term used freely into the 20th century for Africans, Arabs, Asians, South Americans, or anyone else who had yet to embrace industrialism. (American Vice President Dick Cheney continues to refer to Iranians as "savages," by implying Iran is not part
of the civilized world, even as they seek ultra-"civilized" nuclear power.)

Pre-Second World War, the people dreaming of a white world through genocide if necessary were intellectuals, politicians, authors. Now we like to think the few racists left reside on the fringes of a Western society that has always respected cultural diversity. According to Canadian lore particularly, Lindqvist's views are supposed to be the norm.

People like Jared Taylor, on the other hand, are supposed to be on the fringe. He thinks like America's founding fathers did: that America was born a white nation, and that what came before Europe invaded its shores is irrelevant. As he told Donahue on television in January 2003, "We (white people) are now the native population."

Taylor is the editor of American Renaissance, a magazine founded in 1990, according to an interview he gave to England's Right Now! "to encourage whites to think of their interests in explicitly racial terms, to recognize that every other race in the United States does so instinctively, and to understand that if whites alone fail to act as a group, they jeopardize their long-term survival as a distinct people with a distinct culture and a way of life."

Whites risk becoming a minority in their "own" country, says Taylor, and he's scared shitless. He suggests there should be an end to immigration and an end to all employment equity programs. Ideally, non-whites would relocate to somewhere they felt more welcome.

Taylor explained in Vice magazine's "Hate" issue last year that he sees all whites as a natural extension of his family. You wouldn't love other people's children, he argued, so why should you be expected to love other races? As Lindqvist so plainly explains, whites (including Spaniards, Italians and Russians) have barely been able to tolerate other races since their conquest of the globe commenced in the 15th century. The difference is that Lindqvist thinks the meagreness of this tolerance is a bad thing.

I'm comparing these two authors because recently, a new University of Ottawa Speakers Association tried to bring Taylor in to speak about multiculturalism. Kyle McInnis (brother of Vice founder Gavin McInnis) from the group contacted XPress last week, and he was upset the talk had been cancelled. Neither the university nor any of its student groups would pay for Taylor's visit. "This is a perfectly rational way of ... discussing the problems of diversity," McInnis said. The university's failure to go ahead is "degrading to the education system," a sign that political correctness has "morphed the institution (of education) itself."

Federico Carvajal, one of the leaders of the Ontario Public Interest Research Group (OPIRG) at the University of Ottawa, which denied McInnis funds, sees it a different way. Why bring someone to campus whose views go against what your own organization is trying to promote? "Having Jared Taylor speak definitely doesn't fit in with our mandate. OPIRG is very keen on promoting equality and social justice and we're also very keen on fighting racism and discrimination," Carvajal said in a phone interview.

Taylor got back to me in an e-mail:

"The university of Ottawa's decision gives the lie to its claim that it supports diversity and tolerance. On certain subjects it promotes uniformity rather than diversity of opinion, and certainly has shown no tolerance for mine. I am told that the reason for the cancellation is that people might be offended by my talk, but the university sponsors speakers that freely describe whites as "racists," men as "chauvinists," or heterosexuals as "homophobic." Has the university no shame in so openly parading its hypocrisy?"

My own view is that if you've got limited funds, bring Lindqvist to town and take him out for a huge meal afterwards. It's his views that are unfortunately still on the fringes of modern thought, and Taylor's are still coursing through the foreign policy of the most powerful states. Britain's Conservative party, mirroring similar moves in Holland, recently proposed restricting immigration entry to just the most useful non-whites. Britain's Labour party agreed with the Conservatives. And according to Harper's Index this month, 64 per cent of Britons say their neighbourhood would disapprove if more Iraqis moved in; 43 per cent said the same for black Africans.

So Taylor is mostly right about one thing: "Western" has always meant white. If we can tear past this veil, and come to terms with our own barbarism, then, like Lindqvist, maybe we can start building a truly inclusive West the world might actually envy.

If you call yourself tolerant and educated, then you must listen to everyone.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with someone, whether you are racist or not, whether you're black or not, you have to listen to all sides of the spectrum to arrive at your decisions. Otherwise, you are morbidly ignorant, as you claim to have made up your mind based upon a few biased views. I personally am not a racist, but I consciously speak with many who are, I study people like Jared Taylor and I make a concerted effort to listen to what I originally considered to be south honky confederate flag garbage. Not every racist is as dumb as you all may believe. Taylor, for instance, grew up in Japan, which is ethnically uniform. He is quite accomplished academically and in the workplace. See for yourselves: http://www.amren.com/staff/taylor.html
So - not all racists are dumb, not all are smart. Not all are haters, not all are nice. There is just as much diversity amongst racists as any other category of people. Some just want to seperate into their own areas to "protect their race," some just feel other races are less capable, some hate other races, etc. I have plenty of experience with all of them. I even enjoy speaking to some, although I do not agree one bit with their stance.
The point here is folks, and I think Kyle McInnes is making the same one, simply that we need to have discussion about issues that matter, and we cannot call ourselves educated if we are willing to write someone off because we do not necessarily agree with what they say. Has anyone actually READ Taylor? And his comments to Stuart ring true: Ottawa U is simply being hypocritical.
I would have to ask Federico Carvajal to demand his money back from Ottawa U, because he has obviously not learned what "debate" actually is: the bringing together of completely different viewpoints in a situation that faciliates open discussion to come to conlusions. I think Mr. Carvajal would project his group better if he listening to his opponents and countered with his own points.
What say you?

Hatred Is So Wrong, Discrimination Is Even Worse................

I don't put too much value to the opinions of "critical thinkers" like Taylor and Lindqvist.
I believe that we share the same Earth they share with us but that they should remain under a microscope and in plain view lest they amass large groups of followers and create a cult-like existence amongst society.
In reading about the types of people (lost, depressed, suicidal that went to Guyana prior to the Jim Jones mess or to Waco Texas to follow another "Massiah",I am curious why the opportunity to have points of view like those of Jared Taylor combined into a debate that would have allowed other groups with opposing views to explain why each side feels so strongly about their cause? Isn't that important?
Is it better to keep racist leaders out of the public light and potentially have them propogate hatred on websites and in publications which could cause underground backwash and groundswells of support from the jaded and potentially volatile members of society that may be looking for off-the-wall causes to join?

I shudder thinking about the attrocities that we have caused to each other of all races over the existence of time and I too, reach out to help my fellow man/woman/child regardless of race, diversity or mental and physical health.
I also think that North Americans have a higher level of compassion that many other countries but we are still (and could we ever be free of?) racist and intolerant to what we see as different than us, better than us and unclear to us.
Is that which is different, a genuine threat to our safety and security or something that we need to invest time in to better understand?
Finally, I completely disagree with Lindqvist's quote about loving other people's kids:
"You wouldn't love other people's children,he argued,so why should you be expected to love other races?"
What does he say when someone brings in to the room the ultimate symbol of innocence and a human being free of racism and discrimination? Go away??

Racism is a universal sickness...

As easy as it is to point how how racist white people are I think you might want to take a look around the globe. Human nature, unfortunately means that one group favours it's own over anything it does not understand.
Consider the ethnic tensions that abound in Iraq. Consider the resistance in Japan to allow Japanese born Koreans the same rights as the rest of the population. Consider the war between Hutu and the Tutsi.
Before you play the "bad white man" card and paint us as some all encompassing blight on mankind ask yourself how well would you be treated if you the immigration wave went the other way? How do Saudis treat foreign workers I wonder?
I'm not saying I like it, and I'm proud to call many races, sexual orientations and religions amongst my friends but this is the world and assholes come in all shapes and colours.
When children lash out at their peers they say the most hateful hurtful and obvious thing to maximize the effect. That means if you're overweight you can bet that you'll be called fatso. If you have glasses you'll be called "4 eyes" and unfortunately if you're another race you know what's going to happen.
Does that mean that we're a racist intolerant society? I think we're probably one of the most accepting nations on earth. We're not perfect but I'm not going to be ashamed of being white any more than I'm going to feel the shame of having a dick because some woman hating psychopath went nuts in Montreal.
Western society is changing rapidly as other cultures wash over ours. It's not a gradual shift either so people are freaking out. Good or bad I see both, but imagine if all of a sudden thousands of white Christians started to flow over the borders and into someone else's country? The same xenophobic reaction would happen and I dare to say it would be even worse. It's not "white" people who are evil, it's mankind in general.
History has been on the "western" side lately but things always change. Just watch.

Whites risk becoming a minority in their "own" country?
<<>>
I beg your pardon but I didn't just read that right? Evolution (if you're a Creationist feel free to stop reading now) has it pegged pretty simply; the source from which men originally sprung is Africa. Africans, as a rule, are black. As the old ancestors scattered they started to change in subtle little ways, skin got lighter, hair got straighter, etc... Depending on what evolution called for that's how the ancestors of us all developed. Those that stayed in sunny Africa remained closest to the original model. That's not racism, that's a fact.
<<>>
So how do we account for the sheer number of whites in the world? Luck? No, systematic genocide. They called it colonization but everyone else remember differently, right? The Native Americans, the Aztecs, the Incas, you name it and they were hurded, culled and killed because the settlers needed breeding room. Whites are losing ground? I'm sorry, not to be glib or anything, but did Sven Lindqvist ever consider that this is just nature's way of undoing the unchecked growth of one strain of humanity over all the others? It's called karma, look it up.

Warning for ethnophobes

It's despicable to read all these posts spewing hatred towards whites and their achievements. Oh, whites are so effective "racists", responsible for oppressing the entire rest of the world into nonproductive barbarism before ever even having set their foot in it. What impudence! What ingratitude! How about western science, arts, justice and democracy? Have you noticed that almost everything fundamental to civilisation and it's progress has come from these "racists"? No, of course not, you're to busy feeding your anti-white bigotry with invented falsitude and pretended rightousness. And if you belive, like the author of the article does, that whites entertain barbarism among themselves, and therefore can't be envied by the noble non-whites, then why are these pouring into the every white country in innumerable hordes and like their lives depended on it (which it frequently does)? Because they like barbarism? Because they think that their own countries are to good for them? Please, be reasonable and think!

Jared Taylor talk

Diversity has some pros: varied restaurants and more culture but it is also linked to globalization (read: global monoculture), ethnic and racial tension, and overpopulation (mass immigration is the number one cause). Academics have to face these potential downsides.
You claim Taylor's opinion is the mainstream. If that's true why has mass immigration and diversity mongering never been more popular? We are experiencing unprecedented numbers of new immigrants. And because of it our population is now growinng faster than China's. This should be discussed in schools.
Ottawa University paid $20,000 to let Nader tell them things they aleardy knew. Can we not fork over $500 to a Yale grad that speaks fluent Japanese, has published five books and has visited every country in the middle east?
OPIRG receives $98,403 per semester from students at the university. International House receives $52,893 per semester. My brother and his peers, over four years of study, will have contributed approximately $1,210,368 to organizations whose explicit purpose is to promote diversity. Of course, not one red cent can go to discussing a diversity of opinion.

The White Man is the most successful racist of them all

The Ojibwe blood running through my veins gives me an interesting vantage point on this topic, one that I am sure Jared Taylor, whom you mentioned in your article, would claim was purely self-interested. However, I help my fellow man, whatever race, gender or belief system they may advocate. I do not limit my affiliations to that of first nations people.
However, that does not mean that I have forgotten that barely more than 100 years ago, my people were still being arbitrarily slaughtered and robbed of their land and their way of life by a conquering white race who called themselves Christian, for the most part, but were as much like Christ as an ant is like an elephant.
We still grieve and flaunt our disbelief, and rightly so, that six million Jews were exterminated horrendously in this century by a raving dictator. Six million. That is a big number, isn't it? How about this? The estimated stats declare that, during the conquest of this continent, 74 million of my people were slaughtered by the Christian whites. Their methods weren't much kinder and gentler than Hitler's. To punish rebellious Indians, the white man would send blankets laced with small pox to do their dirty work for them.
Has there been progress in the area of racism? Certainly, there has, but one only has to look at video footage of Neil Stonechild's stiff, frozen body in Saskatchewan, to realize that racism is not dead. It breathes. It stalks. It kills. It doesn't always chant degrading epithets. It can be so subtle. It sounds so justified.
My job right now is to type registries for the Privy Council of Canada, dating back to the 1890s. Every time I read another entry that opens "Indians surrender their lands", I have to grit my teeth and keep on typing. Surely we cannot go back and the white man is here to stay, and they are welcome, but let's not pretend that people like Jared Taylor should be allowed to spread their evil message in our universities. Enough, already.

"White people"

The bottom line is that none of us North Americans, wether we be Canadian or such as myself from the United States are natives unless you are descendants of the true native peoples who lived here before the countries were settled by "white people." The term white people is actually hysterical because most people can trace several types of blood within their family lines like French, Irish, Scottish, Italian...etc. As we expand our minds so too does our tolerance. To give any more attention to neanderthals like Jared Taylor is like pissing in the wind.

We all are equally part of a country characterised by its diversity!

Canada is a country built around multiculturalism, and already existing Aboriginal peoples. Canada is the reflection of a cultural, and linguistic diversity that is unique around the world; it's our characteristic, and we should be proud of it!!! It is NORMAL and NATURAL to support diversity and tolerance. So, STOP this insanity!!!

I am Racist

I am not overtly conscious or intentionally malicious about it, but there is an ingrained cultural bias that I have to admit to. As I say, I do not intentionally bias my views or opinions. I try to be open-minded, but I must recognize that prejudice is there. Can I escape my own culture?
