The relaxed swing of violinist Billy Bang's version of Stuff Smith's Only Time Will Tell, which opens A Prayer for Peace, sets the mood for a lovely set of seven pieces by Bang and his quintet of James Zollar (trumpet), Andrew Bemkey (piano), Todd Nicholson (bass) and Newman Taylor-Baker (drums) recorded in 2005. Bang's bluesy, Latin-tinged playing reflects the peace he has found within himself in his middle age. Having wrestled his demons, he's no longer trying to get outside himself. Instead he's on an inner journey that's taking him deeper into the music, and what a fascinating trip it is.
