Three years after the release of his critically acclaimed comeback album I Just Want to Be Held, legendary Detroit soul-singer Nathaniel Mayer is back and, depending on your point of view, he either sounds better than ever or worse than ever. With a voice that can be best and most generously described as raspy, Mayer delivers the record he should have made in the 1970s. Recorded quickly over several days of non-stop jamming, writing, singing and howling, the chaotic and cacophonous album is as honest and raw as they come. Managing somehow to evoke the Stooges, early funkadelic and the psychedelic Temptations - all at the same time - and with a backing band featuring members of the Black Keys, the Dirtbombs and the Sights, the sound is pure Detroit. Mayer seems just as at home here as he does on those scratchy old Fortune 45s.
