Snoop Dogg - (Capitol/EMI)

The Best of Snoop Dogg
Brendan Murphy

This is not the best of Snoop Dogg, which may be a reason to get it. Sure, Beautiful with Pharrell is here, but if you like Snoop then you've already got this. The lesser hits, some of them a bit harder to track down (legally) - like From the Chuuch to da Palace and Snoop Dogg (What's My Name?) - are the only reason to get this compilation. I guess he just fizzocusing on his actizzing these dizzays.

Doin' It Doggy-Style

The main thing Snoop's got going for him is that his songs are damn catchy and it isn't that easy getting his tunes out of your head. "Drop It Like It's Hot", anyone? That song had to be one of the stupidest songs of the year, yet when I turned on the tv it was there. When I woke up in the morning, I slapped myself silly when I realized I couldn't stop humming along. Truth is, I think I'm stuck in the denial phase of actually liking Snoop. And not because he's overtly original, because he isn't. He raps about nothing new; the ladies, the money, the fame, absolute nonsense, and yet, he's completely enjoyable.

Part of his appeal is that he doesn't sound like the tens of thousands of rappers out there, but he has a rather feminine, kind of sweet, high-pitched voice which is pretty darn refreshing amongst all the rugged-sounding DMX and Ja Rules of the rap world. And Snoop doesn't claim to be a big buff and tough rapper like his peers (50 cent & co.) but he's always just played it cool and remains laid back by just being himself. He's scrawny and thin and I could probably knock him silly with one punch even though I'm completely weak, and yet that's fantastic. He doesn't feel the need to lift weights until his arms and abs look like rippled potato chips. If he feels like wearing pigtails, he does so. And let's not forget that he's responsible for an entirely new culture and language. Before I knew it, I found myself greeting my friends with a little "yo dizzle, fizzle my hizzle nizzle" completely subconsciously. It's addictive; blame Snoop, not me!

But back to the album, Drop It Like It's Hot isn't on there. Quite frankly, this saddens me. But I understand that he's done better. "What's My Name?" is though. And so is Dogg's anthem, "Woof!". And I admit, I like to think that maybe Snoop was referring to me on the track "Beautiful" with his talented pal Pharrell. Great picks. This album is the cream of the crop for a respected rap star going on 13+ years in the biz.

One Good Album

Snoop Doggy Dog only had one good album in his lifetime and that was his first album, which was called "Doggystyle." I'm surprised that he would release a greatest hits album because he has had not that many hit songs in his life. I can only think of one album that was a huge hit that had songs like "Murder Was the Case" and "What's My Name." After that all his albums were huge and disappointing flops. I don't believe that Snoop Dog will ever get that critical acclaim success he had with his first album. I would recommend that you buy the first record Snoop Dog released rather than buy the greatest hits album.

Nostalgia

I honestly believe Snoop Dogg has not come out with anything worth listenning since his Doggystyle album. I have heard a few tracks form this album and no offence Snoop but I think you have LOST IT your choice of lyrics and accompanying tracks are less than amazing. They stink! Go back to the dogg house.

Not sure about this one.

If any buys this , they must be head over heels in love with Snoop Dogg. Best of albums are the type of albums that we can make on our own, by burning our own cd with a few nice songs. I guess he's just focusing mainly on his movie career, but in the meanwhile, still wants to stay on the music front, so he's not forgotten. A little bit more cash on the side, without really having to do much is probably just what he was thinking of. Best of albums seem to be getting out of hand now. ANyone can do it, as long as a few cds have been produced, and some remixes have been made.

Not so Best of Snoop Dogg!

The D-O- double G has lost a bit of his rap talented touch. Although very much respected in the rap music industry, this compilation of bests is just to bring in more sale for Kaching$$ and more "ice". If ya know what I mean! Basically, we just could compile a "best of" with our iPods than just to have it packaged into an album...
