Leela James - (Warner)

A Change Is Gonna Come
Beyoncé Burnett

Leela James - she of big hair and big voice - has been hailed by The New York Times as the new Tina Turner. While Leela still has a long way to go before she can even be mentioned in the same breath as Tina, she is definitely a new force to be reckoned with. Her songs, written and produced by D'Angelo-influenced Raphael Saadiq, have way more soul than the Kanye West penned-and-produced numbers. But James sounds pretty good singing the Sam Cooke title track, the Philly-style soul of When You Love Somebody and the sinewy lead-off club hit Music (in which she sings: "We can't go back to yesterday/ but can we just put the thongs away/ and fall back in love with music"). Hands down one my faves of the year.

The proverbial ripples are already in the water where Leela James is concerned. She's slowly but surely making her presence felt with her raw delivery and rich voice. She's still needs some seasoning but the raw talent and passion are there. I suspect that what she really needs is a good producer that'll know how to properly harness her booming voice into a something that'll push her over the edge and into the public's eye. Someone that's definitely on the rise.

She does look a bit like Tina Turner with that hair though, doesn't she? My long-standing memory of Turner is her singing her socks off on some TV show when I was about 13 and my Mum telling me how old she (Tina, not me mam) was. I was so surprised! She was a real 80s lady though, all those sparkly dresses, curly/frizzy BIG hair, but quite a character too with such a powerful voice.

Never heard of Leela James before but might have to have a listen, even if just to discover if her sound is as big as her hair...
