The Bell Orchestre - (Rough Trade)

Recording a Tape the Colour of the Light
Steve Guimond

Long a Montreal secret, The Bell Orchestre drop their first proper package - if you discount their sweet 2004 demo/CD-R release - courtesy of famed indie giant Rough Trade. This five-piece, aided by local luminaries from Snailhouse and Arcade Fire, dabble in the potentially disastrous field of classical compositions set in the pop world. They do, however, escape unscathed, melding their own brew of modern and classical chops, tightly composed instrumental compositions that have one foot in the past and one foot planted firmly ahead of the musical horizon.
