Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - (Lost Highway/Universal)

Jacksonville City Nights
Martin Siberok

Listening to the first two songs - A Kiss Before I Go and The End - on this uneven 14-tune collection, it's undeniable that Ryan Adams embodies part of the spiritual legacy of country-rocker Gram Parsons. The darling of many a critic, this alt-country singer from North Carolina possesses the knack of capturing the angst of fractured moments and expresses it with mournful abandonment. But one wonders if his output is suffering from too much exposure. This will be the second of three releases from this prolific songwriter in 2005. The album lacks consistency and is more a work in progress rather than a finished oeuvre. It starts off with incredible promise but then leaves you drifting midstream with little hope of rescue.

Ryan Adams - Jacksonville

I get the sense that the reviewer is bashing Adams for the sake of being different, rather then actually providing a fair review. I think that although the album doesn't scream out as a hit record, it does something that few artists can pull off - it is consistent, while not being repetitive. It also has this brooding, moody feel, which he is famous for. Although it may seem like a money grab putting three albums out in a year (Get 'Cold Roses' and forget about the album he released after 'Jacksonville'), Adams is a musician and writer in the truest sense. He is constantly jamming and writing new material, and when the outcome is a solid album, why not allow him to pull something like this off? Did anyone knock Neil Young for releasing two albums within 8 months of each other? No. Can you compare Ryan Adams to Neil Young? No, but wait! Anyway, just be fair and give this album a solid listen. I guarantee you'll be drawn in!

Key tracks: Dear John, A Kiss Before I Go

Oh Jacksonville

As the reviewer says, Ryan Adams latest effort does sound like a work in progress, but that just makes this cd that much more impressive. He doesn't have the best singing voice, and sometimes sounds downright sloppy in his playing, but he's still managed to put out a pretty solid cd. It's a shame that people like Ryan Adams and Neko Case get lumped into this "alt-country" genre, when in my opinion, they are playing real country music. It's not the pop, twangy cowboy shit you hear on the radio...this cd puts all of those contemporary so-called country artists to shame, Adams made a country record and it sounds like he wasn't even trying. So far my favorite tracks are, 'The End', 'My Heart is Broken' and 'Withering Heights'...a must have for people Adams fans.
