Ian Dury - (True North Records)

New Boots and Panties
Paul Spence

There's no shortage of artists whose lyrics often eclipsed their music. England's Ian Dury is one who, thanks to his eclectic and sometimes bizarre instrumentation (from dancehall to a fusion of punk and disco) as well as his thick cockney accent, never "made it" outside his native country. But it's on those slippery-slope tracks, like Billericay Dickie (think Mom playing the organ in the living room while Dad swaggers from side to side haranguing the mantelpiece), that Dury is at his best. "I'd rendezvous with Janet/ quite near the Isle of Thanet/ she looked more like a gannet/ she wasn't half a prannet/ her mother tried to ban it/ her father helped me plan it/ and when I captured Janet/ she bruised her pomegranate." This re-released classic album has a stack of excellent bonus tracks, and is sure to make you wet your gannet, no matter how you plan it.

More than sex and drugs and rock and roll....

It's been a long time since I gave any thought to Ian Dury. This is a good, nearly great, record. "Sex and Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll" got played to death by the classic rock disc jockeys who ended up played "new wave" music to revive their careers but it deserved better than that. "Sweet Gene Vincent" is a great track, as is "My Old Man".

Kudos to True North.
