Martin Luther King Jr. samples can get you into trouble. Apparently Mark Farina played one too many. A club he was spinning at in the late '80s demoted him from the main stage to the back room. Without pressure to conform, he began experimenting with house, fusing it with jazzier down-tempo stuff, and produced a limited cassette called Mushroom Jazz. In San Fran, 1992, Farina turned that tape into the now infamous Mushroom Jazz nights. The club folded but the sound was captured in his legendary Mushroom Jazz series. No. 5 is another solid offering. Farina's almost flawless mix of ambient, jazz and breakbeat, and the depth of soul on this album, sets it apart from other "chillout" down-tempo sets. The smooth sounds of J Boogie's "Afros in Ya," with its chuggy breakbeat, is a memorable opener, setting a slightly left-of-centre tone for the rest of the album. Farina is the talked about, time-tested visionary.
