De La Soul - (Sanctuary)

The Grind Date
Brendan Murphy

Sure, George W. won the election, but De La Soul have a new album out and it's amazing. Thankfully moving away from whatever it was they were up to on AOI: Bionix, their last full-length, the Strong Island natives create an album for 2004 that manages to sound both current and representative of their own sound, a distinctive voice that goes back almost as far as the genre itself. Boasting some of today's best producers - Madlib, 9th Wonder, Jay Dee - and legendary lyricists like Ghostface, MF Doom and Common, The Grind Date is, simply put, the best hip-hop album I've reviewed this year. So sure, the red states of Jesusland continue to saturate North America, but De La Soul are back on the map and fighting back.

De La Soul is the essence of hip hop from the golden era

Most people who comment on De La Soul were not around during the golden era of hip hop 1987-1992. So when I read reviews of their feelings on De La I take it with a grain of salt. That being said, The Grind Date is a BANGER!!! Grown man music at it's finest. The beats are tight and the lyrics are witty enough for the proverbial De La intellectual fan and straight enough for he common man to understand. This is a CD you put on a play from cover to cover,(Can that be said about much of so called hip hop today?) NOT!! Anyway I think De La and people in my demographic (Early 30's, married, kids, mortgage) understand now that De La does not have to conform or explain themselves to anyone, they are like Ray Charles they "make it do what it do baby, yeah!" I recently attended a De La show in Atlanta and you had heads from 15 to 45 jumping and sweating during the whole set because they continue to make classic material. All you 49 cent fans see me when you are in your 30's and tell me if he can still tour. Their catalog of hits and classics can only be matched by a few. DE LA SOUL FOREVER !!!

De La Soul: The Grind Date

Yes, sir! The return of those original hip-hop soldiers will only help the sorry state of the rap game today - let face it, especially with the departure of ODB earlier in the week, there ain't a whole lot to get really excited about it. I've heard them rock the mick on TV on some late night show and, believe me, their stuff is as tight as it ever has been. Should have been kinda harder to believe that their whole record is as good as Brendan Murphy try to make it sound, but, remember, we're talking about De La Soul, here. The hype is then quite righteous. Buy the CD, folks, you won't regret it and, by extension, you will suport true b-boys who have truly help put the genre where it's at today - in a good way, of course!

De La Soul are Back and Better

Back in the late 80s De La Soul had one of the biggest record on the planet and they were star but that all faded away as the 90s came in and we never heard of De La Soul again. De La Soul are three young talented man and I have been hearing many wonderful review for their new album titled "The Grind Date" which is taking the world by storm as we speak and putting De La Soul back on the hip hop map. So congrats on De La Souls new record and it's great to seem them back in the spotlight.

De La Soul is back

Some people like De La Soul, some don't. I'm indifferent. I could always take them or leave them and not lose any sleep.

I won't say that they aren't talented but can I say that I groove to them? Nope. Just not my beat but it probably is a handy cd to have around for certain occasions. They've matured a little so this cd is a bit deeper than their last one.

Aren't these guys dead yet?

Oh, that was just their career that took a dirt nap.

I didn't like them then and I fully doubt that that has changed.

Hey, if you like them then congrats and enjoy the album but as for me I'd rather drive a screwdriver through my ears.
