The United Records Story
Mike Chamberlain

This is a fine compilation of 22 tracks from Leonard Allen's United Records label, which the liner notes state was the first successful black-owned record company. United stayed in business from 1951 to 1957 and featured a wide array of musical genres, from blues, to R&B, soul, gospel and jazz. This album captures that variety, with selections from artists as diverse as Roosevelt Sykes, Leo Parker, Robert Nighthawk, Tab Smith, The Pastels and Della Reese. Any album that includes Memphis Slim's hit Memphis Slim U.S.A. has a leg up, and the previously unreleased (on CD) Crazy Walk by Tab Smith is a treat, but one or two of these might have been better left in the vault. Still, a good comp that will be sure to please your weird blues-loving uncle at Christmas.

Ok, I'm no weird blues-loving uncle at Christmas (only child and all but I'll take the weird tag if it fits) but odds are you'll eventually see me adding this to my CD collection. My tastes run in rather ecclectic directions and a solid blues compilation is not entirely out of my range of interest. Good old tunes sometimes work better because there was less instrumentality to muck the process up. These days so much happens in a recording studio that what you get live on-stage is often a surprise. For good or for ill, well, that's a question you'll have to answer for yourself. Add another one to me 'to buy' list.
