Coldplay Live 2003 [DVD]
Jamie O'Meara

The only incongruous element in Coldplay's career-defining album of last year, A Rush of Blood to the Head, is the jarring opener Politik. So what do they do here, on this 90-minute live DVD shot in Sydney, Australia? They kick it off with Politik. That aside, this is a truly remarkable endeavour. Quick change-ups between handheld and static cameras, close-up focus pulling, rapid splicing and grainy hyper-colour imagery amplify an already (surprisingly) energetic live performance. The lighting, musicianship and sound are all outstanding, though I'd suggest boosting the bass at home. Two new songs (Moses and One I Love) find Coldplay stylistically warping out of their nascent Radioheadedness and, quel surprise, morphing into U2. Lots of bells and whistles attached, including a beautifully put together, 40-minute tour documentary that approaches art. Also comes with a 12-track live audio CD of similar high quality. A great DVD of a great show from a great band

Two studio albums and an infernal world tour later, Coldplay is now throwing our way a resounding one-two punch, a live album accompanied by a concert DVD. For 90 good minutes, Chris Martin and company shake our world with their luminous melodies. Such energy on stage. The guys really do belong in the same league as a U2 or a Pink Floyd, from an influences standpoint as much as the desire to conquer a live audience.

A magnificent package, with an original opening mecanism, extras and easter eggs that last well over an hour, 4 great new songs (One I Love, See You Soon, Moses (wow!!!), Life Is For Living) and excellent live versions of Don't Panic, Clocks, God Put A Smile Upon Your Face ...

A very well-done show that is proof that this band has gone a long way in such little time. Do you know a lot of bands that can succeed in making 10 000 strong sing and dance to hteir music after four years of existence and two studio albums ? I don't.

With Live 2003, Coldplay is issuing a statement. They are here to stay. A great gift idea and a wonderful souvenir from their Bell Centre performance of february 2003.

A very, very good overall product.

Love Them

Coldplay is beginning to really grow on me. My daughter plays alot of their music and I am starting to really get into their groove. I went to see them with her and really enjoyed their concert.

When you can't get to see them live...

...this DVD is the next best thing. It simply booms with their sound and stage presence, emitting the same kind energy that you get from going to a live show, the only exception being that then you are a part of it whereas with the DVD you are a mere spectator. However, being a spectator to this show is worth it, you get to see the band up close, plus you have the extras... I enjoyed the tour documentary and have been listening to the CD a lot more than their studio ones.

Now all I need to do is get tickets for their next live show!

Live 2003 is a great souvenir and captures Coldplay at a peak!

I saw Coldplay at the Corel Centre in Ottawa, back in February 2003, the day after their Grammy performance. Chris Martin was charming and disarming, and the rest of the band was spot on. My wife and I had a great time that night and I became an even bigger Coldplay fan, picking up import singles and searching for live bootlegs online. So when I heard about this Live 2003 CD / DVD coming out, I was fairly excited, and honestly this set doesn't disappoint.

Although the Live 2003 show was recorded in Australia, the track listing is the same as the Ottawa gig, making it easy to pretend it was recorded here. The show is beautifully shot and seamlessly captures the intensity and craftsmanship of the band. All the great singles are here: "Yellow", "Trouble", "Don't Panic", "In My Place", "Clocks" and "The Scientist". As well, there are some real treats here for the fans. The new song "Moses" is quite enjoyable and the non-album B-side "One I Love" is fantastic.

The DVD menu is easy to navigate. One can access any of the 17 individual tracks, as well as their lyrics quite simply. (The lyrics are a nice touch, since they aren't included with either of Coldplay's albums.) There is also a listing of all the shows they played during the world tour for A Rush Of Blood To The Head and a candid 40-minute black-and-white tour documentary.

What really impressed me though is the fact that they included an audio CD along with the DVD for no extra charge. I've got too many concert DVD's and videos that I don't get to enjoy, because I can't spend the time watching them. At last I can listen to this show in the car or at work! Unfortunately, for the CD they did have to pare the track listing down to 12 songs, losing such personal favourites as "The Scientist" and "Life Is For Living". Oh well.

Anyway, Live 2003 is a great souvenir and captures Coldplay at a peak! I just hope that the next time Coldplay tours, they'll come back to Ottawa and not just hit Montreal and Toronto.
