That's What's Up!
DJ Booth

Hopefully everyone has recovered from the New Year's Eve festivities as winter is slowly but surely starting to warm up! If this month's early selection of events is any indicator, '08 looks to be a very promising year in the clubs. I bet you look good on the dance floor...

Disorganised: Juiceboxxx and Dre Skull

Disorganised plays host to the madness that is Juiceboxxx, a hyperactive Midwestern 19-year-old MC who shakes and pops alongside his shape-shifting NY DJ/producer Dre Skull. Together they'll be bringing their next-level approach to electro-punk club rap to Ottawa in support of their brand new release, Sweat, which features additional productions from Spank Rock's XXXChange and Baltimore legend DJ Technics. Meet me in the club, it's goin' down with the JOTS, DJ I8a4re and Eric Roberts on Friday, January 5, at the Clocktower, $5.

World Beats & Eats Anniversary

World Beats & Eats, the Mercury Lounge's monthly arts fundraiser/helluva good time, celebrates its second anniversary this Friday with a special move to SAW Gallery (67 Nicholas) where food from Thyme & Again, B. Goods bakery, Elgin St. Freehouse and Par-fyum will be served along with music giveaways from Kelp Records, videos from SAW Video and beats from the likes of Emily Jones and special guest DJ BenMore. The night will also include a vernissage for Post Here II: a compilation of series-based posters and flyers for events that have contributed to Ottawa's growing arts scene. The proceeds
of the anniversary will go toward the GCTC. It all begins at cocktail hour (that's 7 p.m.) on Friday, January 5, at the SAW Gallery.

New Order DJ Set: Peter Hook

From Happy Mondays to Blue Monday, Helsinki once more pulls from a growing list of legendary musicians-turned-DJs by welcoming Joy Division/New Order bassist Peter "Hooky" Hook behind the decks. Hook, who recently compiled and mixed the Hacienda Classics triple CD set and at one time had a crucial hand in the development of said club through both live and DJ performances, will be delivering an exclusive genre-bending set to Ottawa spectators. Expect something special indeed as he brings together elements of rare groove, soulful hip-hop, hip-house, house and indie-dance classics alongside the Jokers Of The Scene on Saturday, January 13, at Helsinki, $15.

Funk You: Greenskeepers & DJ Diz

Heaven welcomes the new year with a new monthly party focusing on the deeper and funkier sides of house music. Funk You starts its badass run with Chi-town house-heads James Curd and Dwayne "Diz" Washington of Greenskeepers and Iz & Diz fame respectfully. Both artists will be in town celebrating their new releases; Greenskeepers' Polo Club full-length on Om Records has been turning heads with its deep house excursions into new wave and pop, while DJ Diz's From Home With Love will drop later this month to whet the appetites of those looking for something on a more soulful tip. Give up the funk as Balu rounds out this evening on Friday, January 19, $15.

Mui Afro Funky: Mad Mats

The Mercury Lounge welcomes back Mad Mats, the extraordinary Swedish DJ/producer and head of A&R for two of the most cutting-edge record labels representing all things raw and funky. Mats' musical vision can be seen and heard in the diversity of Raw Fusion's and Jugglin' Records' rosters of artists: Spiritual South, Povo, Damn!, Beatfanatic, A Bossa Electrica, Freddie Cruger and more line the walls of underground record shops from San Francisco to Japan.

Mats' own club night, appropriately called Raw Fusion, has played host to everyone from Carl Craig to Bugz In The Attic to Jay Dee to United Future Organization and many more. You can be sure to expect more of these deep house, cutting edge funk, raw soul, dance floor jazz, rough Latin and deep boogie sounds alongside Trevor Walker at the Mercury Lounge on Thursday, January 25, $TBA.

Ah...it's too early in the year to say...

NYE was a washout anyway with the Ice rain we had. Sorry, don't feel like trashing my car just to go party thanks.
So, far shows worth mentioning this year would be
Twelve 34 on Jan.6
Evanescence lat night at Scotiabank place with Stone Sour
Chantal Kreviazuk at the NAC on February 25
ian and dave Thomas at the Centrepoint theatre on March 15
meatloaf at the Scotiabank place on march 16th
Johnny Winter at the bronson Centre on March 26th
Now can we gets some more good bands back into the clubs again...I saw some pretty weak ones last year.

I maybe missed it but I'm wondering if I can introduce the new Beatles album into the discussion of new music? Because it rocks. It's an interesting way to bring new audiences to old music, and it's presented in such a fun way it's irresistible.
and just to mention, DJ Booth, I think this year is actually '07 not '08...
