Zucchero gets it right

So why can't more downtown lunch joints?

One of the best things about doing the office nine-to-five is lunchtime. And one of the worst things about lunching in Ottawa's tiny Centretown business district is trying to find somewhere decent. During my office stint in the especially godforsaken northwest quadrant of this area there were countless times that I ate mediocre, overpriced food in a ho-hum atmosphere, only to arrive back at work late after waiting FOREVER for a table/the bill/change/whatever (a life just full of hard knocks, I know I know). I don't work around there anymore, but I still tell people who do and complain about it to save money and eat better by brown bagging it instead.

Now I'm saying, go to Caffé Zucchero.

Zucchero is right next door to Barbarella's Diamond's (sic) strip club on Queen Street, which makes for some funny people-watching. When I walked in I was struck by the good smells coming from the open-concept food prep area/espresso bar, and the bright and airy decor. The resulting atmosphere feels energetic yet relaxing. The menu offers homemade soups, panini sandwiches, light entrées, salads, all-day breakfast, and a full array of espresso bar and cold Italian beverages; and almost all of this at $5 or less!

The service was wonderful, and most important of all, the food was amazingly good. Zucchero obviously does not compromise on ingredients. Everything was of the highest grade and super fresh-definitely not the waxen stuff you find at those chain espresso bar/panini joints that are popping up everywhere
lately.

The soup of the day was beautiful. A buttery broth with hunks of onion, potato, and leek left unpuréed, a delicious twist on an old favourite. That day's panini special was a mouthwatering combination of thin, tender slices of roast beef with cream cheese, horseradish, and razored Bermuda onions on the freshest of crusty white panini rolls. The prosciutto, bocconcini, and tomato basil panini was equally good, as was the marinated roasted vegetable salad. All of it gorgeously presented.

Dessert was a special treat the owner went out of his way to whip up for us fresh-some zabaglione (a frothy light custard of egg yolks, Marsala, and sugar) crowned by a couple of unseasonably plump and tangy blackberries. We pushed things a bit by accompanying this with an even frothier cappuccino, but the overindulgence was justifiable and one of the best I've ever tasted.

As I sat there in growing awe, enjoying with a lovely friend a wonderful meal that surpassed all expectations, I also started to get a bit angry. Why weren't there more places like this close by? Wow, what a concept: homemade, delicious, healthy, affordable food served to you by beautifully mannered people in a bright and comfortable atmosphere where some thought went into the decor. We should demand this of all eateries! And it works. Zucchero hasn't been open that long and already this small business will be renovating soon to make way for more seating (they can currently seat about two dozen).

I may not miss working in the neighbourhood, but I'll definitely be going back to Zucchero soon and often.

Rudeness prevails

One nice spring day, after this review, my husband and I decided to walk to CZ.
We ordered and a "lady", the owner's wife came over to the table and told me, "You have the soup."
"Yes," I agreed.
She then began to berate me because I had a soup and it was on the special. I didn't understand it was ONLY on the special so she started shouting at me in a full dining room.

People, it is only soup. I ordered it. The waitress brought it. I would have eaten and paid for it. This should not be cause for a scene. In a restaurant one is expected to order food without punishment.

The scene had me in tears. I paid and we left.

We went to Scone Witch and everyone there was kind and smiling and gave me delicious food to eat without a fight. (Imagine such a concept!)

We host many people in Ottawa. Scone Witch is on our list. Guess who isn't.

Worst $10 spent on a lunch ever

I ordered the special Rigatoni with Pancetta for takeout.
It was $10. I could of made this for $2.00 myself
It was cold.
The Pancetta represented cubes of unchewable fat.
The Rigatoni was cold.
The Tomato sauce was complety bland.
I called the Cafe to tell them, and was thanked but not offered any compensation for wasting my time and money on thier terrible food.

Excellent Food, and Service

I don't usually take the time to write a review, but Caffe Zucchero makes it worthwhile. The food has taste that you would only expect from home-cooking. The service is always pleasant, and the atmosphere comforting.
The Zuppa (soup) is often heaven to the pallete, and the pasta sauces are filled with mouth-watering flavours.
Both Claire and Stephen are great people, who treat me well whenever I visit. They have recently expanded the seating, so it's easier to get a seat nowadays....

Get Ready

We were looking forward to lunching at this highly reviewed eatery. I did two one hour massages in the morning. On this most beautiful, long awaited spring day. we walked across town to finally eat at Cafe Zucchero.
The waitress Katlyn was most gracious and very willing to fulfill our dietary needs with suggestions and joyous guidance.
My guest ordered the daily special and I ordered the soup and a #4.
The female owner unexpectedly came over to our table and loudly dressed me down for all to hear for ordering the soup as it was only on the special. "We have RULES here!" she blared condescendingly; then huffed off. (And I was to know this because...?)
It was SOUP, people, I was hollered at for ordering SOUP in a restaurant at lunch.
HINT: A guest in your establishment isn't just one person. They are the sum of all their return visits and all the people they refer.
We have a business with thousands of people a year passing through our door. They always ask us where to eat. We hand them a restaurant list of only places we have eaten at and have had a positive experience. This list is posted on our web site where thousands of people coming to Ottawa also view it.
If you want to eat in a pleasant, peacful environment this place doesn't make the grade.

The best in Ottawa by Far

Just a simple comment.
Went there and was treated to the best in coffee, soup and sandwiches... what a place. I keep telling everyone who eats out to try it...and the decor is as tasteful as you can get..
We need more Cafe Zucchero's in the city and further.
My hats off to the owner and creator .

Fabulous eating!

to the Caffé Zucchero and it's nice to finally see a place that is actually good and affordable in this area. The service is wonderful (I'm a regular on a first name basis), plus they speak French (definitly beats the Tim Horton's a few doors down), the food is incredible and the coffee and specialty beverages are very good. Really nice atmosphere as well. It's a welcomed change from all the hotel restaurants and the very doubtful Place de Ville food court. Let's all hope it's there to stay!

A very nice italian discovery!

This is a small, a very cozy and a quaint little restaurant with great simple italian food. The type you like having for a perfect quick lunch that will cost you no more than 8$. My panini (splendid baguette!) was just delicious. The service was attentive and prompt. I will definitely go back.

Awesome

I really enjoyed my first visit to this quaint little café and I will certainly tell my friends and will certainly go back. It reminded me of a small bistro in Italy.

Super little Diner Zucchero

I really am happy to hear from a cafe/Diner with a such a varied menu, and most of all extremely reasonnable, never heard of, nice and old fashion service, Zucchero sounds like it is going to be a smash as a restaurant , Homemade soups, Homemade sandwishes from scratch, nowadays we have a slew of chain Restaurants, example Quiznos also Mr. sub quite mundane nothing spectacular. Rare to see especially in the downtown Core something New and Unique, Finally I hope everyone will take their turn to try out this lovely little cafe, it sounds outstanding, worth the money in gold, it will be for me a place I will want to associate time and time again, the onion soup sounds awsome chunks of potatoe and leeks, Yummy, this place does not compromise in ingredients that is a big "Plus" the sandwish WOW Prosciutto tomato basil and bocconcini on a panini roll, many times we get those sandwishes and without the proper mix of ingredients and the caring Nothing stands out. I am already Hungry for More lets try as soon as possible, this Place Zucchero exceeds all my Expections in a Cafe, they really go out of their way to please their Customers and It SHOWS, Superb for this downtown neighbourhood and their Deserts another" Wow" Everything fresh, Zabaglione totally outstanding frothy Marsala sugar crowned with tangy blackberries just mouthwatering I can actually taste it in my mouth. Bravo job well done "Lucy Best" thanks for a spetacular review.
