Nascar 3D: The IMAX Experience

(Canada, United States, 2004) Directed by Simon Wincer Category : Documentary. Length : 40 min.. Classification : Not defined

Movie description :
This 40-minute doc narrated by Keifer Sutherland is a must for North America's 75 million (yes, you read right) die-hard NASCAR fans. It's the next-best thing to actually being at the racetrack. The film retraces the history of stock car racing from moonshine runners to the rise of the Daytona 500 as one of the world's premier race events. I have one major complaint: This "doc" edits in fake race footage filmed on the back straightaway of the Talledega Superspeedway (where there are no bleachers) with genuine race footage on the smaller oval at Bristol Motor Speedway where crowd-filled bleachers surround the track. That said, the 3D effects driving in the cockpit are nothing short of spectacular.

Pre-emptive critique of...NASCAR 3D: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE

As a friend of mine has won a run of engagement double pass and I'm now commited to seeing NASCAR 3D: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE with him I may as well give my usual

pre-emptive and post-mortem reports on the cinematic event in question.

if it wasn't already common knowledge how low in my esteem the entire IMAX experience is then this write-up will make it all abundantly clear.

Just because you magnify the screen size and boost the picture resolution and film stock that DOESN'T mean that you've augmented the overall experience. Just the hype.

For the price of an average IMAX ticket you usually get a 40 minute high definition visual barrage that's supposed to blow you off your axis and initially, it usually does but after a while the novelty wears thin and you pretty much have to judge any given project by the same merits as any other film; the strength of the script, the cinematography, the sound & editing, the intent and overall execution of the project, etc...

As a person who's seen more than a few x-treme IMAX projects I'm pretty used to the heady close-ups and fast cuts so I'm pretty much expecting more of the same here. The trappings of the medium are such that very few directors know how to pull an original rabbit out of their ass when it comes to the IMAX. Not a knock, just a fact.

Ok, so it's narrated by Keifer Sutherland. Celebrity narrator? Check. Ponderous dialogue with some oblique message? Check. Hey, this isn't my first time, ok? So, will this IMAX experience be worth it? Who knows. Maybe. I just know that I'd rather save up my money and see a quasi-real race than have one recorded for me in giganto-vision.

Oh, well, I'm off. Vroom-vroom!

Whoa.....

Despite the often feelings of discombobulation during the film, it is one of my personal favorites of the IMAX format. For anyone who has or has held a fascination with the macho world of driving will probably find this quite enthralling. The point of view shots from the drivers perspective are the money shot of the film. As are the crowd shots that best exemplify the sports fans passion for it. Too bad that it will be virtually impossible to see it again. That is a shame.

A new passion!!!

I didn't know anything about car racing except to hear that Villeneuve (F1) didn't finish his race again... This film was a great introduction. It is an excellent documentary. That film shows every aspect of car racing: the pit; the driver; the race; the spectators; etc. I love the new experience so much; I bought some tickets to go at the Pocono Raceway this summer. If you're a fan of car racing, you have to see it. If you're not a fan of car racing; you'll become one if you see that movie.

Didn't convert me

I'm not a fan of Nascar or loud noises, but I was hoping my love of speed would make this enjoyable for me. Unfortunately this just confirmed my hatred of Nascar. For my love of speed I'll just think back to the rollercoaster movie they had at IMAX, it was much better.

Wow! What IMAX was made for!!!

I loved this! I love the IMAX screen! It is such an experience to sit there and absorb a movie on a screen that is bigger than most buildings!

I love NASCAR, which added to my enjoyment. But my ex-wife's sister was there, and she hates racing of any kind! But even she loved it! IMAX is made for these kinds of movies. Loud, fast, and pulse pounding! I caught myself holding my ex's sisters hand a few times, because the crashes seemed that real!

This is available on DVD. If you don't have a big screen, with surround sound, don't both unless you love NASCAR. But if you get the chance, see this at an IMAX!

Nascar 101

My late arrival and an uncomfortable front-row seat could not detract from the thrilling experience of being in the drivers' seat of a blazing-fast NASCAR!

This was a wild ride around corners and pits. We sat in the driver's seat and in the stands, and the IMAX did its best to bring the event to life.

I learned a lot about NASCAR, but I think it could have been more lively and action packed. Again, I was sitting to close for comfort, so I will admit that my view might be skewed.

IMAX'd out: Nascar 3D: The IMAX Experience

Well, I can't say that I've left myself all that much wiggle room here but then again I don't have to.

For the record, this screening did not disappoint but given that my expectations weren't all that high to begin with that's not saying a lot. It was what it was and if you felt differently then bully for you but as far as I was concerned I wasted my time on a project that could have been so much better than it was.

NASCAR- 3D - A MUST SEE!!

I'm a big fan of IMAX & when this unique opportunity to see not only a IMAX film but also in 3D, I just had to jump at it!! Was I glad I did go to see it because it was an experience which I'll never forget as long as I live! Not only are you seeing all the top stars on the NASCAR circuit but to ride along side of them in their car was like if you were in the actual race itself. At times very scary with the crashes filmed only in a way that IMAX picks up all the action & you see it as it actually unfolds. NASCAR fans are a unique bunch as you will see- they are loyal to the sport & the drivers are in return to the fans as well. The movie is as big as life , & I would recommend it to any NASCAR fan or for that matter any 3D fan, they will get their money's worth.

Thrilling for fans

I really hate car racing for various reasons, most of all the message it gives about ecology and worrying about the health of our planet. So, why did I watch this film? Partly because I wanted to learn more about racing, get an idea of the opposition, so to speak, but also because the friend I went with is a huge fan of NASCAR and I thought I'd be able to better understand why...

It is a good documentary and needless to say my mate was nearly jumping off his seat with excitement, and I started to realize that the thrill of speed, sound and the possible danger in these heated competitions is one reason to be a fan. However, I'm not converted, but any fan of NASCAR will love this IMAX presentation

Racing comes to life in front of your eyes

'Nascar 3-d: The IMAX experience' is a fast-moving show about racing with NASCAR cars even I can appreciate! I didn't know anything about this whole new world, but the film gives a good background, for example, of how a NASCAR car is meticulously built to withstand the great races. I love the 3-d effects of the show - it brings racing really to life in front of the audience! Every second was well taken in with great enthusiasm!

I went to see this at the IMAX and have to say I really got dizzy seeing this in 3d that it made me want to throw up. It was a great show but abit to much for me. My head was spinning to much. Dont think I will nascar in that way again.

Much better than actually being at the racetrack

My toddler loved this movie much more than an actual race. I attend because he's too young to go by himself. I enjoyed it more than I anticipated.
