Gritty 70s Critique of Suburbia

I guess we should thank Cobain for name-checking this film and contributing to bringing it out of obscurity. I had seen this film when it originally came out and remembered it for the drug use and feathered hair. I saw it again years later and grew to appreciate it for its criticism of planned suburban communities.

In this sub-topia that the residents have made for themselves, every conceivable aspect of their community is designed to give the semblance of normalcy. But of course, there are underlying issues with regards to the kids who grow up in this place. Something that the parents are refusing to address until it blows up in their face.

This film still holds up despite the seventies grit.

Kurt Cobain Favourite Movie

Over the Edge was Kurt Cobain's favourite movie all time. In many interviews before his death he would always mention this movie in interviews and how it had changed his life over time. Kurt Cobain said that whenever he felt depressed he would always watch this movie. Over the Edge is about a group of teenagers who protest and take over the recreation centre before it will be closed down. They do whatever it takes from it closing down because there is nothing to do in the town but hang out at the rec centre. This was the first movie ever for Matt Dillion who got discovered while he was ditching school and roaming the hallway. John Kaplan directs the film and he does a magnificent job.
