Baraka

(United States, 1992) Directed by Ron Fricke (Chronos). Category : Documentary. Length : 1:36. Classification : General

Movie description :
Baraka is a stunning kaleidescope of breathtaking imagery and beautiful music exploring the evolution of the earth. As Koyannisqatsi trancended the genres of documentary and experimental film. Baraka is an ode to earth, its inhabitants, and the impact of their actions. Blending slow motion and time lapse techniques, this is one unforgettable experience.

A lesson on life

It's a shame, and a disgrace, that so many cinemas in the US won't show movies about Evolution. They use freedom of religion and belief to defend their position. But evolution isn't a belief. It is a fact.

And it is nothing to be afraid of! I think Evolution does more to prove the existence of a God, than disprove it. Evolution is beautiful. It isn't always pretty, but neither is love.

This film does an amazing job at bringing a dry topic to life on the big screen! If you watch this, I guarantee that you won't look at life the same way again.

See it!

I found it more interresting than Geoffrey Reggio's movies

Why?

Koyannisqatsi and Naqoyqatsi are excellent movies to be shown in film studies, those films, (rather experimental than documentary) put in application of sort of filmmaking theories.

On the other hand, Ron Fricke's film is interresting to be shown in social studies: anthropology, international studies, religion, third world environment...

For example, Fricke compares with a parallel editing the crowded world metropoles(Tokyo, NY, Sao Paulo) to a chicken factory. The city dwellers are like the birds on a rolling mechanism...

In other words, it is not justice to see Baraka as typical IMAX movie to be enjoyed exclusively for its plastic beauty.

Background music

When I worked in a video store, I would always have to have movies playing so customers would realize "Oh yes, they have movies here !!". If you're into movies as I am, it becomes a problem when customers dare interfere with your movie watching pleasure, interrupting your film watching enjoyment- just so they can watch a film- how dare they !!! So I found a compromise - put on a film- that you can enjoy - but it's not a big deal if someone bothers you in the middle of it. SO one of the films I'd try to put in was BARAKA ( for the record- GREASE and any of the THAT"S ENTERTAINMENT films also worked ).

Now about the movie - it's a trippy kaleidoscope of images of nature, progress and society - and the intermingling of all 3. It's pretty stunning to watch - but chances are- this is not a film you'll go out of your way to see, it's more "background music" for your senses. The Philip Glass soundtrack- while great- becomes deadly annoying after having the same rthym beat into you for about an hour and a half ( actually it became annoying about 7 minutes in .. but I digress ! ).

Kind of a "oh yeah.. that's art" type of movies. You should see it, but I daresay, don't rush to go out of your way to see it.

A great Journey!

An amazing cinematography with the best scenary ever....our Earth. The mountains, the prairies, the deserts, the oceans, the lakes, the rivers, their inhabitants, their cultures, their traditions. An extraordinary journey that I often take by watching the DVD. It reminds me that my horizon goes past what my eyes see every day.

Mother Earth

It's all about Mother Earth, the beautiful planet we call home. It's about the beauty of the different landscapes, it's a voyage through music and sounds. Your eyes will be amazed and your ears will ask for more. And you will get the urge to pack and leave. The message of the movie is the we're lucky to live in such a beautiful planet and instead of respecting nature we destroy a bit of it every day. A must see!

An emotional ride

This is a wonderful movie! (quite a contrast to my rave review about American Pie- I know). Images and sounds from this movie have stuck with me since I saw it over 10 years ago. The rhythm of the chanting and music is so compelling, add to this a visual splendor rarely scene in more commercial films. I have memories of it that are emotional as well as visual. I yearn to see it again.

This is a lovely way to see the world without having to leave Montreal. Or should I say, a more affordable way to see the world. Some movies are as good rented at home. This however is not one of them. The magnificence of this piece would be severly compromised by a small screen and tiny-at-home sound system.

This movie is a must-see!

Wow!

Amazing... I had no idea that this film existed until I was at a friend's place and someone requested this film be put in the DVD player. I am glad that they did. I was speechless. This film was outstanding, though I didn't get to watch it in it's entirety, I certainly plan on purchasing this film.

Breathtaking imagery, and music!

Baraka is an amazing variety of images, and magnificent music adapted to it. This sort of film will be more appealing to adults, whom I think can more appreciate the beauty of the scenery. Actually it is more like a documentary, with no narration. This will enables you to draw your own conclusion about the beauty and the woes in our world.
