Ransom

(United States, 1996) With Mel Gibson, Rene Russo and Gary Sinise. Directed by Ron Howard (Parenthood, Far and Away). Category : Suspense. Length : 1:57. Classification : Not defined

Movie description :
Call me a cynical bastard, but I just couldn't feel any sympathy for Gibson in the role of a stinking rich airline magnate who faces off with kidnappers who have abducted his young son. I was rooting for the bad guys all the way through this yuppie anxiety flick. It's not supposed to work that way, so either something's wrong with me or the film doesn't do what it's supposed to.

Every parent's nightmare

I recently saw Mel Gibson's Ransom on television a few nights ago and I was reminded that it was a decent movie. Ransom is based on every parent's nightmare: their child disappears from a crowded city park and no one has even noticed. The parents, played by Mel Gibson and Rene Russo, are obviously distraught, especially since there is a possibility that their child was kidnapped due to Gibson's involvement with airline unions. Then the ransom request comes in; that's when the plot becomes interesting. Mel gets mad when things go bad and turns the ransom against the criminals, offering up money to anyone who helps ensure the return of his son. Ransom is a pretty good movie, both Mel Gibson and Rene Russo play the terrified parents well. The movie is tense and the characters and the plot are quite believable. I would recommend watching this movie once. After you have seen it and know all the surprises, it isn't as good. However, it is still a fun, exciting movie to see for the first time.

Huge suspense movie

Ransom really has a tremendous cast consisting of Mel Gibson, Rene Russo and Gary Sinise in this Ron Howard directed suspense thriller.

Mel Gibson is the head of a huge financial empire married to his beautiful wife (Russo) and that has a young son. However, his son mysteriously disappears. A few hours later, poor Mel receives the ransom demand. Not only does he choose not to pay the kidnappers, but he uses the ransom money as a bounty on their heads. This turns out to be the beginning of a breathtaking race against the clock, as the head kidnapper is now under the heat and desperate to put some extra pressure on daddy, who will have none of it.

The mood in this raging suspense is as tense as one could get. For the full two hours, the spectator really has no problem staying fully focused and on the edge of his seat, awaiting new plot twists. The movie simply contains no blank or empty spots. It's full on, full steam ahead for the entire pciture. And I must say all actors deliver some tremedous performances in this nail-biting suspense, especially Sinise and Gibson. You can litterally read the intensity and focus in their eyes.

Overall a huge suspense movie that will send chills right down your spine. If I were you, I wouldn't watch this one too late, as the adrenaline rush from watching it might keep you awake for a while.

Ron Howards Masterpiece

In Ransom, Mel Gibson plays a rich dad who gets his only son kidnapped for Ransom by the bad guys. One of the bad guys is a detective who wants two million dollars and won't give up the fight until he gets the money. There are so many twists and turns in Ransom. Mel Gibson shines in this film and this is why he gets paid the big bucks in Hollywood. Ron Howard is the legendary filmmaker who has made classic hit film like "Backdraft" and "A Beautiful Mind." Ron Howard is now considered one of the best top ten directors of all time and Ransom is one of his masterpiece films.

Suspense At It's Best

This is one of the great suspense films I have ever seen. Mel Gibson is truly one of the most powerful actors in Hollywood. This film deals with the trauma and horrors when your child is kidnapped and then the kidnappers want a huge amount of money to have your child back. I have seen Ransom numerous times and every time I see it just gets better and better than the first time.

Gary Sinise is superb as the bad guy in this film who won't let go until he gets want he wants. Ron Howard does a splendid job behind the director's chair and always puts out a hit film. A film you should see is Ransom and you will not regret it.

Average

Only one word would accuratly describe this sort of movie and it's : average!

RANSOM isn't a bad movie, but it's just not an original one. There's too many non-essential acting and comments that don't go anywhere. It is one more predictable average american movie that you already know the end of it as soon as the movie begins. Other than that, it's hard to argue about the performance of the cast, which is really good. But, this movie doesn't belong to the must see category. It is only an average remake.
