"It's a dark romance, very Gothic, lots of shadows and action," says Kelly of the low-budget Ottawa remake of American cult movie director J.R. Bookwalter's 1991 original of the same name. Proof that there's no hard feelings, Bookwalter will be releasing Kelly's film through his direct-to-video Tempe Video label this fall.
Kingdom revolves around Jeff, a guy who lives with his mother. He works nights at a video store, a gig that prevents him from realizing that mom's a bloodthirsty murderer with a taste for kiddies. Complications arise when Jeff meets Nina and Mom wants a piece of the action.
Made for $40,000, the movie is Kelly's sixth in the B-horror genre since he began with The Feral Man in 2002. Other titles are The Bonesetter, Final Curtain, Prey for the Beast and the aforementioned campy horror-comedy My Dead Girlfriend, which was picked up by Blockbuster.
A former stage actor, Kelly says he wanted to get into film, but "there was no film work to be had in Ottawa, so I decided to make my own opportunities."
