Blood sucker redux

Brett Kelly premieres the latest Kingdom of the Vampire

Romeo and Juliet with fangs is how local schlockmeister Brett Kelly describes Kingdom of the Vampire, his latest B-horror feature after last year's indie hit, My Dead Girlfriend.

"It's a dark romance, very Gothic, lots of shadows and action," says Kelly of the low-budget Ottawa remake of American cult movie director J.R. Bookwalter's 1991 original of the same name. Proof that there's no hard feelings, Bookwalter will be releasing Kelly's film through his direct-to-video Tempe Video label this fall.

Kingdom revolves around Jeff, a guy who lives with his mother. He works nights at a video store, a gig that prevents him from realizing that mom's a bloodthirsty murderer with a taste for kiddies. Complications arise when Jeff meets Nina and Mom wants a piece of the action.

Made for $40,000, the movie is Kelly's sixth in the B-horror genre since he began with The Feral Man in 2002. Other titles are The Bonesetter, Final Curtain, Prey for the Beast and the aforementioned campy horror-comedy My Dead Girlfriend, which was picked up by Blockbuster.

A former stage actor, Kelly says he wanted to get into film, but "there was no film work to be had in Ottawa, so I decided to make my own opportunities."

Asked to explain the
lure of low-budget horror flicks, Kelly is philosophical: "Sometimes people want a steak, sometimes they want a burger. I'm happy to give them burgers."

Vampire Alla Carte

Think of all the variations of the theme, wasn't there a theatrical piece put on recently showing teen vampires? Here is somebody who played a modern day Dr Frankenstein and get my head squeezed by the monster, so I can appreciate the many versions that we can come out with from a wider spectrum of character nuances! If it weren't for B films the A ones wouldn't be there!

"B" is for Better

I would say some of the best horror movies are the b-rated type. Most Hollywood produced horrors suck. They are way too clean. If interview with the vampire was produced amateurly, it would have been way better than the "Clean "version. Anyway judging from Brett Kelly's My Dead Girlfriend, which is an awesome horror, probably be labeled a classic now, I think Kingdom of the Vampire might be even better, being as the producers probably have a larger budget to back them up, but hopefully not too much of a budget or else it won't be a "Budget " movie any longer. The less money you have ,the harder you have to try to make it work.
P.S. I think your photo caption belongs in the Savage Love column.(pretty clever!)

What about Montreal...

I do think that there is a fair portion of the public...both anglo and franco..who would be interested in seeing this schlocktastic delight. Brett Kelly ought to gets some [points sheerly for his sheer audacity in attempting a horror film on the minisule budget of sixty thousand. Unfortunately if it not distributed by Alliance Atlantis it will not even be available to the Canadian mainstream. Even if they wanted to ignore it! That is a real shame as I will have to wait until it is digitally available or hope that it is still available until by next trip to Ottawa!

Film Review 101/Brett Kelly lays on the schlock and poutine in his latest B-masterpiece, Kingdom of the Vampire

"Sometimes people want a steak, sometimes they want a burger. I'm happy to give them burgers."--schlockmeister extraordinaire, Brett Kelly.

Burgers? Really? Reheated grits drowning in cheap ketchup is more like it. This is gonzo horror that makes vampire B-movies look like a Shakespearean production. Most of you won't appreciate good trashy genre on a cheapo budget but I do. I know what you're thinking, this looks cheap and stupid, right? So what? Some of the multi million dollar movies Hollywood spits out aren't better or more original but idiots still line up to see them because the ads make them look passably cool. Ideally this baby should have screened during Montreal's famed Fantasia festival or tried for an October time slot. The weather sucks (again!) and most people won't be in the mood to see something like this at this time of the year.
