Ottawa's riot grrrl

Jennifer Whiteford voted best writer/poet
photo: Aaron McKenzie Fraser

Jennifer Whiteford is to Ottawa's literary scene what C'mon's Katie Lynn Campbell (according to Now Magazine's Best Of issue this year) is to Toronto's music scene: all power/all woman. Riot grrrl Whiteford's band is no more, but her writing career and tours with Gorsky Press's Perpetual Motion Roadshow are on fire. From her cutesy online zine, www.matildazine.org, to her daring debut novel, Grrrl, Whiteford's facts and fiction explode the misconception that rocker chicks are just groupies gaggin' for it in the back of the band van. Catch her Saturday, November 25 (Venus Envy, 320 Lisgar, 8 p.m.) with Megan Butcher as they launch A Guide to the Mannerly Wooing and Winning of the Object of Your Affection, their new kick-ass zine on wooing and winning your beloved.
