Art on Paper! No origami reindeer, and no tacky holiday napkin crafts - this is real classy art, very upscale stuff. Art on Paper is a group show on view all this month at the Dale Smith Gallery in New Edinburg. All four of the exhibit's artists are bound together by their choice of medium, which is paper. But the processes each uses to put imagery onto said paper are vastly different. With black ink and a clumsy piece of bamboo, Christopher Griffin records images for future large-scale paintings. Often, he says, the strength captured in these spontaneous images cannot be recreated accurately when painted. The strikingly graphic and highly chaotic montages by Oli Goldsmith combine digital output and transfer processes with paint, ink and other traditional media. The pieces being shown by Ehryn Torell are urban scenes in which the graphic marks are playfully mimicked and pulled off the paper with dressmaker pins and gestural threadwork. Finally, Ottawa's Heidi Conrod is going to be presenting a series of linocuts where "the look and feel was inspired by ancient Japanese woodcuts," she said, after I caught up with her at Patrick Gordon Framing where she was picking up her work. Art on Paper opens on Friday, December 8, at 7 p.m. and runs till the end of the month at Dale Smith Gallery (137 Beechwood Av.)

I don't care what you all think, this sounds cool. As an old art geek from way back when this exhibit sounds real interesting and it bloody sucks that I'll probably miss it because I can't get away from things until well after the holidays. For once this feature did it's job by marrying a solid write-up with a photo that isn't utter bollocks. Kudos!

Sounds complex yet creative in the same sentence...(get it?) that kind of art deserves mention AND a visit just to see what this mixture has produced! Best of luck to the artists involved...truly an original thought!!!
