Gossip’s fifth album, A Joyful Noise, is flawlessly titled; the disco-pop extravaganza, one of the band’s strongest offerings to date, is also less linearly punk than its predecessors. The texts, fiercely rendered by ravishing headperson Beth Ditto, communicate a melancholy antithetical to the LP’s electro-funk undertone. Get a Job, an exuberant critique of a lifestyle seemingly derived from HBO’s Girls, precedes the album’s strongest track, the handclap-friendly Move in the Right Direction. By far the best pop song heard since Robyn’s Call Your Girlfriend, this obscenely catchy gem will make you hope Dr. Luke and RedOne quit manufacturing lacklustre garbage after hearing what brilliant danceable music sounds like. This summer couldn’t have hoped for a better soundtrack.
